Shattering Stereotypes

Hailing from a conservative Muslim family, Yasmin I S of Coimbatore faced numerous challenges to pursue a career in the man-dominated field. She triumphed over regressive notions to emerge as the city’s first female detective, inspiring a new wave of young women to defy stereotypes and embrace equality. Discover her resilience, determination, and the impactful decisions that shaped her path

Yasmin’s response:

Inclusion means equal opportunity to me. As a woman, I speak for all women here, and I feel, we are made to perceive inclusion as a privilege. The society seems to ‘include’ us out of pity or for namesake. Unlike men, we are not enough as such to be ‘eligible for inclusion’. By all means, inclusion is important and inevitable; it sets the stage for me to express my capabilities. How will you judge my worthiness for anything without fairly evaluating my skills? Therefore, I say, inclusion must simply be a birthright.

Being a woman, I’ve faced pervasive barriers – expected to juggle traditional roles professionally, deemed ‘weaker’ for safety concerns, and confined by societal boundaries. Exclusion seems inherent, from professional expectations to safety concerns and familial restrictions. The struggle is deep-rooted from birth, challenging the essence of being a woman.

Entering this field ignited a war at home, met with the dismissive ‘you’re a woman’. Unsettled, I questioned why others dictate my abilities based on gender. I showed them that I could do it just as good or even better than any man. And, I take immense pride in my work.

As a society, do we realize whom are we constantly protecting the women from? Our fellow human beings? It is high time we understand that everyone, unmindful of their orientation, deserves equal treatment, and not discrimination or segregation on any basis. To progress, it’s vital to unlearn outdated cultural practices and notions that confine individuals to limiting boxes.

At 20, fresh out of college, I took a typing job. Despite excelling at work, the owner used to find faults and behave inappropriately in an attempt to make those corrections, leaving me uncomfortable. That’s a time when I didn’t know about good and bad touches. Though I sensed something was amiss, I couldn’t quite pinpoint what it was.

At one point, someone close to my company’s owner suggested I ‘adjust’ with him for extra pay. This greatly infuriated me. I immediately resigned that day, making a significant stand and delivering a resounding message by firmly slapping my owner across the face. This incident made me realize how, for women, it is not just about work; there are numerous hurdles, including gender disparity, to be navigated. Ever since, I vowed to be my own boss, a major life decision, aspiring to create a workplace where women are valued and obstacles are dismantled.

Opting for a career in investigation stands out as a decision that brings immense pride and contentment to my soul. Known for being trustworthy, this profession has turned me into a reliable source of solace and solutions for individuals in dire need. While I explored various fields for personal and financial growth, it is in the investigative realm that I found a truly fulfilling career, one that not only satisfies my professional ambitions but also nourishes my soul.

Today, I am proud to have employed many young, fierce and bold women. They all do the ‘man’s job’ very well, unmindful of weather and timing of the day. The best part is, they would not have to ‘adjust’ to get their hard work recognised and rewarded.

On a personal level, I have raised my daughters without distinguishing them from boys. They enjoy the same treatment and the so-called ‘privileges’ bestowed upon any boy in the family. Likewise, boys in our extended circle share equal responsibility in household chores, debunking the notion that certain tasks are inherently for girls. In our home, tasks are assigned based on what needs to be done, without differentiation or segregation based on gender.
